Laos

Laos

A small landlocked country with a diverse, friendly and laid-back people, the country provides plenty of adventures for those willing to explore a bit of the beaten track. With the mighty Mekong river running through the country many people choose to enter the country from the north in Thailand and take a slow boat down the river, eating fish, watching the sunset In the North there is the Plain of Jars, and ancient burial site of a lost civilisation. The spectacular waterfalls of the Bolaven Plateau nestled amongst ancient rainforest are not to be missed.

Cities

The city of Luang Prabang sits where the Mekong meets Nam Khan, and can be counted as the country’s most charming city, with nods to the French colonial times, beautifully robed monks, temples, and side treks. Vientiane is the sleepy capital city with a historic old quarter, and can be a nice place to rent a holiday house and enjoy everything that the city has to offer.

Rainforest and Rivers

The hub of outdoor activities and adventures is found in Vang Vieng, which has notoriously been known for it’s name as a backpacker haven and drunken tubing down the river. In recent years there have been a lot of changes which has set to change the wild reputation of the town. Stay in a rented holiday villa for the perfect vacation. Visiting pristine, ancient old-growth rainforest should be at the top of any trekkers list, just make sure to go on an official trip or take a guide as it’s still not advised to go off the beaten track due to the UXO’s (unexploded ordinance) that are left from the various Indochina wars that saw Laos caught in the crossfire.
